A Look Back at Week 5 in the ACC
We are already five weeks into the College Football season and there are intriguing games on tap for this weekend. But first, a look back at Week 5 in the Atlantic Coast Conference.
15)Miami 49 South Florida 21
The Hurricanes built a 49-7 lead over the Bulls and coasted to the victory on Saturday. Stephen Morris passed for 2 touchdowns and Dallas Crawford rushed for two to lead Miami.
The game may well have been more lopsided but the Canes turned the ball over 4 times. In return, their defense forced 3 South Florida turnovers.
Morris led Miami despite tweaking his ankle. The Hurricanes stay perfect, going to 4-0 on the season.
East Carolina 55 North Carolina 31
It was Military Appreciation Day at Kenan Stadium and it was the Pirates running down hill against the Tar Heels all day.
The Pirates racked up 603 total yards against a defense who has not been able to find it's way this season.
Shane Carden threw for 376 yards and 3 touchdowns. He rushed for 3, as well. Vintavious Cooper rushed for 186 yards for East Carolina.
Bryn Renner passed for 366 yards and 3 touchdowns in a losing effort for the Tar Heels, who fall to 1-3 on the season.
Pittsburgh 14 Virginia 3
The Panthers have been a bit of a surprise in their first year in the ACC. In a game dominated by the defense, Pitt moves to 3-1 on the season.
Neither team could muster more than 200 total yards in the game and a total of 5 turnovers were forced by the respective defenses.
Tyler Boyd caught 7 balls for 111 yards in the winning effort.
Virginia drops to 2-2 on the season and 0-1 in conference play.
Duke 38 Troy 31
Brandon Connette passed for 324 yards and 3 touchdowns while adding 55 yards rushing and 2 scores on the ground to lead the Blue Devils in the out of conference match up.
Jamison Crowder had 7 receptions for 149 yards and a touchdown in the game.
Troy hung tough the entire game. With the game tied at 28, Duke wi Duke finally took the lead for good with a score in the third quarter.
The Blue Devils move to 3-2 on the season after the victory.
8)Florida State 48 Boston College 34
The Seminoles overcame a 17-3 deficit and finally shook a stubborn Eagles team in this ACC clash.
Jameis Winston passed for 330 yards and 4 touchdowns and led the team with 67 rushing yards in the ball game. Kelvin Benjamin caught 3 Winston passes for 103 yards receiving.
Florida State keeps pace with Clemson with the win. Both teams are 2-0 in the Atlantic Division. Florida State is one of 4 undefeated teams in the conference after the victory.
N.C. State 48 Central Michigan 14
The Wolfpack stepped out of the conference to face the MAC conference Chippewas.
The State defense held Central Michigan to just 259 yards and forced 3 turnovers on the day.
Pete Thomas passed for 244 yards and Bryan Underwood caught 5 passes for 148 yards and a touchdown for the Pack.
N.C. State built a 38-0 lead before Central Michigan finally broke into the scoring column in the game. State builds it's record to 3-1 with the win.
3)Clemson 56 Wake Forest 7
Tajh Boyd passed for 311 yards and 3 touchdowns and rushed for 69 yards and a touchdown to lead the undefeated Tigers to the win.
Once again, Sammy Watkins came up big at receiver with a touchdown reception and 113 receiving yards.
The Tiger defense held the Deacons to just 222 total yards and kept quarterback Tanner Price in check. Price passed for only 125 yards and accounted for the only Deacons score with a touchdown pass to Sherman Ragland III.
Clemson improves to 4-0 and sit atop the Atlantic Division with Florida State. Those two teams clash on October 19.
Virginia Tech 17 Georgia Tech 10
Remember the Hokies team who fell to Alabama in Week One? Virginia Tech was a team full of holes and written off by many. That team is now 4-1 after a huge road win at Georgia Tech.
Bud Foster's defense held the high flying Yellow Jacket offense to just 273 total yards and forced 3 turnovers. In a nutshell, the Hokies played vintage "Beamer Ball" in the game.
Logan Thomas had one of his better games of the season at quarterback,managing the game efficiently. Thomas threw for 221 yards and a touchdown while rushing for 58 yards, adding another touchdown on the ground.
The Virginia Tech defense throttled Yellow Jacket quarterback, Vad Lee. Lee completed just 7 passes and threw two picks.
The victory moves the Hokies to first place in the Coastal division.
