Five ACC Teams Remain Unbeaten after Four Weeks
News Flash! Maryland is pretty good! The Terrapins are one of 5 teams in an improved ACC who are unbeaten after Week 4 action.
Maryland became 4-0 after a 37-0 stomping of West Virginia at College Park. Once again, C.J. Brown led the Terps, passing for a touchdown and rushing for one. But it was a Maryland defense that forced 6 turnovers and kept the goose egg intact, that should get a lot of the credit. They only allowed 175 total yards in the game.
Clemson remained unbeaten as well, defeating N.C. State 26-14. Despite the Clemson victory, it was the score that wasn't counted that caused the phones at sports talk radio to ring off the hook following the game. Bryan Underwood was ruled to have stepped out of bounds after scoring a Wolfpack touchdown. Replays showed that he appeared to have stayed in bounds. Regardless, Tajh Boyd and the Tigers get the victory in this one. Boyd threw for 244 yards and 3 touchdowns in the victory.
Georgia Tech came from behind to defeat North Carolina to join Maryland and Clemson in the ranks of the undefeated, 28-20. The Yellow Jackets trailed 20-7 before scoring the last three touchdowns to earn the victory. Vad Lee threw for a touchdown and rushed for one in route to the win. David Sims ran for 99 yards and 2 touchdowns in the game.
Florida State and Miami both stepped out of the conference against inferior opponents to remain unbeaten. The Seminoles took down Bethune-Cookman 54-6 while the Hurricanes had no trouble dispatching Savannah State, 77-7. Florida State rolled up 492 yards of total offense led by Devonta Winston who rushed for 112 yards and a touchdown. Meanwhile, further south in the State of Florida, Miami racked up 637 yards against the out manned Tigers.
Virginia Tech had their hands full against a scrappy Marshall team. It took overtime but the Hokies prevailed with a 29-21 win. Logan Thomas scored from 2 yards out for the game winner. Thomas struggled most of the game but Virginia Tech rode running back Trey Edmunds to the tune of 110 yards rushing in the game. The Hokies improved their record to 3-1.
Wake Forest evened their record to 2-2 with a 25-11 win against Army on Saturday. Josh Harris scored twice leading the Demon Deacons. He ended up with 96 yards rushing in the ball game.
Meanwhile, Duke and Pittsburgh left their defenses at home while their offenses racked up a combined total of 1130 yards in a game in which the Panthers held on for a 58-55 win. Tom Savage had a monster game passing for 424 yards and 6 touchdowns. Brandon Connette threw for 323 yards and 4 touchdowns while rushing for 101 yards and 2 touchdowns in the loss. James Conner rushed for 173 yards to lead the Panthers.
Syracuse picked up their 2nd win in as many weeks, defeating Tulane 52-17. Terrel Hunt passed for 4 touchdowns for the Orange who move to 2-2 on the season. They scored the last three touchdowns in the game and 5 out of the last 6 scores.
The Virginia Cavaliers rolled against VMI, 49-0 on Saturday. They held the Keydets to a total of 79 yards in the game. Meanwhile, they were able to roll up 580 yards of total offense to fuel their victory. They move to 2-1 on the season. Daniel Hamm rushed for 136 yards and 2 touchdowns while Kevin Parks contributed 135 yards and 2 touchdowns in the Virginia victory.
